Distinction and Discernment: The Honest Truth

"It may be a bit difficult to change yourself according to other people. It is a real challenge when you try to retain your individuality in the midst of a like-minded society".

This quote is especially true in the context of today's world. Out of the fear of judgement, we often change ourselves. We are afraid that other people would judge us, look at us strangely, and perhaps talk about us with others. If you resonate with this, know that you are not alone. I used to think like this, and to be honest, I still occasionally do.

But why are we afraid? Think about it for a while. Why are we scared, and what are we scared of?

There is no right answer to such a question. Answers may vary from person to person. Everyone has a different perspective. And here is mine.

We often restrict ourselves due to the fear of judgement. We do not want to be seen as ideal, but we also do not want to be seen as inadequate. And although we should be conscious about ourselves, that consciousness should not restrict ourselves from doing what we want. No one should be afraid of being judged by anyone.

If you want to do something, do not let somebody's discernment stopping you. The truth is, most people are so wrapped up in their own lives that anybody else's choices are rarely their concern.

Do not stop yourself. Do not worry about anyone's perspective towards you because that is temporary. The only expectations you have to live up to are your own, and maybe your family's. So, the next time you find yourself tensing up over others' perceptions, just take a deep breath and remember that you are meant to stand out, not blend in. Remind yourself to be an orange sunset in the middle of an evening sky.
