The cow is seen as a sacred animal as it provides milk which is important for life. Often, the milk produced by the cow is even offered to Hindu dieties in temples and is used to make prasadam.  This animal is also a representation of Mother Earth due to its milk which provides nourishment to all creatures and a source of goodness.  These reasons mentioned above are a few of the reasons why the cow is important in Hinduism. Maha Shivratri

Maha Shivratri is celebrated every year in honour of the Hindu god Shiva. It is said that on this day, Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati. It is also said that on this day, Lord Shiva performs his divine dance called the Tandava. There are 12 shivratris every year but Maha Shivratri (or the great night of Shiva) is celebrated in between the months of February and March.  Maha Shivratri is an important festival in Hinduism and it symbolises the overcoming of darkness and ignorance. It is celebrated by remembering Shiva, observing fasts, chanting prayers etc.  There are many ideas as to why Shivratri is celebrated. Some believe that it is celebrated for Shiva and Parvati's marriage marriage, some think that Shiva performs the Tandava. But there are others who say that on the day of Maha Shivratri, Lord Shiva drank the Halahal poison which came during the churning the Ocean of Milk or the Samudra Manthan. Lord Shiva beheld the poison in his neck and because of this, he acquired t...

Oh, How Time Flies!

Time flies by really quickly. So quick that you don't even notice. When you finally do notice how much time went by, it's too late to make any changes. For example, whenever you or someone else is narrating your childhood story, you remember yourself as a little toddler. Just think about it. Think about how much time has passed ever since you were one. Yeah, it's been a long time, hasn't it? That is precisely why you should enjoy the time that you have right now. Have as much fun as you can. Live in the present. Leave the past alone. Whatever is happening, is just happening. If it makes you feel better, remember that nothing is in your hands. Just go with the flow of life. Although it is not always easy to look at the best side of life, do try to do so. Look back on the memories you enjoyed and be thankful that you have good things that you can remember and look back on. Everything happens for the best. The good things in life grant you good things to remember and the b...

Fire

Image
Isn't it relaxing to be sitting in front of a fire on a cold winter day of December or January? Sitting beside the fire with a cup of a hot drink in your ice cold hands? It is quite calming, no? Fire gives us the sensation of something burning. Fire also gives out bright light, heat and smoke. Fire is also regarded as one of the five elements in Hindu mythology along with earth, water, wind and space. Togethe, these five make up something called the Pancha Bhoota in Hinduism. Hence, fire also has a great spiritual importance in India. Fire, or Agni, is considered as the messenger between the people and their gods or dieties. It is also the personification of the sacrificial fire.

Cold weather

It has been really cold these past few days. There has been really huge blizzards in Buffalo, New York, North America and there has been dense fog in North India. Wherever you are living, we can all agree with the fact that this year's winter has been quite harsh. Being a fan of winter season, I love the cold winter breeze blowing in my face and I get excited whenever I see thick and dense fog. I also know that there are people like me who are also fond of the cold weather in winter. But despite this, we have to take care ourselves during winters. Nicely layer yourself whenever you are heading outside. Also remember to wear your hat! I know wearing hats are not always fun, but wearing a hat is better than suffering a headache and heavy head because of the low temperatures. This weather is quite unpredictable and it can also make you sick with cold and cough. So please make sure that you always keep yourself warm, regardless of where you live. Your health is very important and takin...
